Growing Broccoli Sprouts in a Jar Time Lapse

How to Grow Broccoli Sprouts in a Jar

Growing broccoli sprouts at home is easy, and all you need is a jar and some simple supplies. These tiny powerhouses are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a great addition to salads, sandwiches, or smoothies. Here’s how you can grow your own broccoli sprouts in a jar!

➡ How to Grow Broccoli Sprouts in a Jar

↪ Ingredients/Materials

2-3 tablespoons of broccoli sprouting seeds (available at health food stores or online)

A large mason jar or sprouting jar with a mesh lid

Water

A rubber band (if not using a mesh lid)

A small bowl or plate for draining

↪ Instructions

1. Soak the Seeds:
Place the broccoli sprouting seeds in the mason jar. Fill the jar with water, covering the seeds completely. Let them soak for about 8-12 hours (overnight works well).

2. Drain the Seeds:
After soaking, drain the water from the jar. If you have a mesh lid, simply secure it and invert the jar to drain. If you're using a regular lid, place a rubber band over a piece of cheesecloth or a breathable cloth, and then secure the jar upside down to let it drain.

3. Rinse and Drain:
Rinse the seeds with fresh water and drain them again. Make sure the seeds aren't sitting in water, as this can cause mold.

4. Sprout the Seeds:
Place the jar in a warm, dark place like a cupboard or pantry for the next 2-3 days. During this time, rinse and drain the seeds 2-3 times a day to keep them hydrated and encourage sprouting.

5. Expose to Light:
After 2-3 days, the sprouts should begin to grow. Once they have reached about 1-2 inches in length, move the jar to a spot with indirect sunlight for 2-3 hours a day. This helps the sprouts develop their green color and increases their nutrient content.

6. Harvest the Sprouts:
After about 5-7 days, the broccoli sprouts should be ready to harvest. When the sprouts are about 2-3 inches long and fully sprouted, give them a final rinse and drain thoroughly.

7. Store the Sprouts:
Store the harvested sprouts in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days. Enjoy them in your meals or as a nutritious snack!

➡ Tips and Swap Ideas:

Use a sprouting lid: For ease of rinsing and draining, invest in a mesh sprouting lid that fits on a mason jar.

Add variety: Mix broccoli seeds with other sprouting seeds like radish or alfalfa for a more complex flavor profile.

Perfect location: Keep your jar in a warm area for sprouting, but not too hot—around 65-75°F (18-24°C) is ideal.

Avoid mold: Always drain well to prevent water from sitting in the jar, as this can lead to mold growth.

Growing broccoli sprouts is a simple way to add a nutritious boost to your meals, and they grow quickly in just a jar. Experiment with different sprouting seeds and enjoy the freshness and crunch they add to your dishes!
